Introduction / History

The Bukawa, (AKA, Kawa) are an indigenous people living along the Huon Gulf coast of Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea. Their communities are located in coastal villages and nearby inland areas along the northern shores of the gulf. The people are closely identified with the Bukawa language, also known as Bugawac or Kawa, which belongs to the Austronesian language family common across many Pacific island regions.

The name Bukawa is connected with a village along the coast and eventually came to describe the broader language community. Over time the Bukawa people developed a distinct cultural identity shaped by the sea, coastal trade routes, and relationships with neighboring peoples of the Huon Peninsula.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Bukawa communities traditionally live in coastal villages where the sea and surrounding forests strongly influence daily life. Fishing is an important activity, and canoes have long been used for travel and for harvesting food from the ocean. Families also cultivate gardens where they grow staple crops such as root vegetables, bananas, and other foods suited to the tropical environment.

Village life is centered on extended family relationships and cooperation among relatives. Families often live close to one another and work together in gardening, fishing, and caring for children and elders. Trade with nearby villages has long been part of life in the Huon Gulf region, allowing communities to exchange food, tools, and other goods.

Most Bukawa people are multilingual, commonly using their local language alongside Tok Pisin or other regional languages when interacting with neighboring groups or towns.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the dominant faith among the Bukawa people, and churches are an important part of village life. Christian worship, teaching, and fellowship help shape moral values and family life in many communities.

At the same time, in some places, traditional ideas about spiritual forces or ancestral influence still affect how people interpret events such as illness or misfortune. Continued biblical teaching and discipleship help believers grow in a clear understanding of the gospel and the saving work of Jesus Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

Bukawa believers benefit from continued discipleship that strengthens their understanding of Scripture and encourages faithful Christian living. Supporting pastors and church leaders with biblical training and teaching resources helps churches remain strong and grounded in God's word.

Access to Scripture in their language provides an important opportunity for families and churches to study and apply the Bible more deeply. Encouraging younger generations to engage with scripture and participate in church life will also strengthen the future of Christian witness among the Bukawa, Kawa. In addition, improvements in education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods can support the well-being of families and villages.

Prayer Items

Pray that Bukawa believers will grow in spiritual maturity and develop a deep love for God's word.
Pray for pastors and church leaders to be strengthened with wisdom and faithfulness as they guide their congregations.
Pray that families and young people will follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly and build strong Christian homes.
Pray that the churches among the Bukawa will remain united and active in sharing the gospel with neighboring peoples.
